Cloth Diapers Clothing and Apparel Pacifiers and Bottles Covers and Waterproof Layers
Good to know for all products
- Keep away from dry heat. We recommend not hanging items directly over a radiator or any other dry heat source, as this will prematurely age elastics, can lead to melted laminate, and shortens the life of your waterproof materials.
- No bleach or fabric softener. Avoid contact with all bleaches and fabric softeners in any form. If necessary, use OxiClean to whiten. Fabric softener, including liquid and sheet style softeners, will cause washable diapers to repel all liquids and lower their absorbency.
For more in-depth explanations of cleaning techniques, please see Fluff Love University's guide.
Cloth Diapers
Before first use: very important! All cloth diapering products MUST be prewashed at least once before use. Thicker, heavier diapers and inserts should be washed three times and dried once to ensure optimal absorbency.
Storing soiled diapers
Soiled diapers should be stored in a water-resistant, odor-proof pail, container or bag. Remove any solids (feces) before placing soiled diapers into the container. Do not rinse washable items or soak them in water until you're ready to launder them.
The longer a diaper sits wet, the faster it will wear out. The best way to preserve your diapers is to keep them as dry as possible between washes and to carefully follow the rest of these care instructions.
Choosing a detergent
Before putting anything into the washing machine, make sure any solids are emptied into the toilet. Keep these points in mind when choosing a detergent for cloth diapers:
- Do not use any detergent that contains natural oils or fabric softeners. These coat the absorbent fibers of the diaper and cause liquids to be repelled.
- Choose a detergent with enough surfactants to get your diapers clean. Diapers are more heavily soiled than your regular laundry and have multiple layers of fabric.
- Avoid any detergent that contains sodium percarbonate or bleach.
- Avoid detergents with ingredients you are sensitive to.
- Avoid any detergent that contains enzymes, as they can cause rashes.
- Make sure your load is not too large or too small. Either will result in poor cleaning and reduced longevity.
For more help finding a great detergent, see this detergent index.
Drying: Hang drying is recommended when possible, but a dryer may be used if permitted in the specific product section below.
Pocket Diapers
Remove the absorbent insert from the inner pocket so that you have two separate pieces. Both the pocket diaper's PUL outer and the absorbent insert can be washed together in a washing machine. Use a heavy-duty, full wash cycle with warm (not hot) water and a safe-to-use detergent.
Heavily soiled diapers may require a pre-wash with detergent before the main wash with detergent.
Either hang both the diaper and insert up to dry or place them in the dryer on low temperature.
Prefolds
Prefolds should be washed three times before first use to ensure maximum absorbency. Be sure to fully dry the diaper after the final pre-use wash cycle.
Use a full wash cycle with hot water and a detergent that is safe for cloth diapers. Be sure to remove any solids before washing. For heavily soiled items or those with strong odors, a prewash with detergent is recommended. Follow with a full wash using an extra dose of detergent to ensure a deep clean.
Dry as desired. Prefolds can be tumble dried or line dried, depending on your preference and the desired softness or longevity of the fabric.
Omutsu Cloth Diaper
Omutsu diapers should be washed three times before first use to ensure maximum absorbency.
Because of the thickness of the product, tumble drying on low heat is recommended. However, Omutsu Cloth Diapers can also be hung to dry if preferred.
Flats
Use a full wash cycle with hot water and a detergent that is safe for cloth diapers. Be sure to remove any solids before washing. For heavily soiled items or those with strong odors, a prewash with detergent is recommended. Follow with a full wash using an extra dose of detergent to ensure a deep clean.
Dry as desired. Flats can be tumble dried or line dried, depending on your preference and the desired softness or longevity of the fabric.
Swim Diaper

Hang to dry whenever possible to extend the life of the item. If using a dryer, select a low temperature setting.
Secure Containment / Locking Pants
Hand wash in warm water or, if that's not possible, machine wash on warm. Select a safe-to-use detergent to maintain the integrity of the materials.
Hang to dry. Do not tumble dry.

Pacifiers and Bottles
Pacifiers
While pacifiers may seem like they're all fun and games, it's important to remember that just like a little, they need lots of attention and care. Properly storing and regularly cleaning your pacifier will go a long way toward extending its life and keeping it free of icky germs. After lots of use, pacifier nipples may become worn down or damaged, so remember to inspect them often and replace them whenever necessary!
It is not necessary to take a pacifier apart to wash it. Fill a sink with warm water and add a touch of food-grade dish soap. Put the pacifier into the water and gently use a cloth to clean it all over. Once done, rinse with fresh water and let it dry for a few minutes before it's ready to use again!
Do not put pacifiers in the dishwasher, as this puts stress on the nipple and causes it to gradually degrade. We also do not suggest boiling your pacifiers. The one exception is the Enigma, which is fully silicone and can be boiled to sterilize it. For best results, and to make your pacifier last as long as possible, only hand washing is recommended.
Latex nipples: Latex may absorb some water during cleaning, which can make the nipple temporarily look white or cloudy in color — this is completely normal. Simply let the latex nipple air dry, and it should return to its original color once fully dry.
When a pacifier isn't being used, storing it in a safe, clean place means it's ready to go the next time your little one needs some comfort. There are two different types of pacifier nipples: silicone and latex.
Silicone nipples are less picky and can be stored just about anywhere. However, a pacifier storage pouch is recommended to keep your pacifier clean and make it easy to find or carry with you.
Latex nipples should be kept away from sunlight and moisture as much as possible. Higher temperatures can also cause a latex nipple to slightly lose its shape or degrade, so storing them in a temperature-controlled environment is recommended.
If your favorite pacifier's nipple starts to wear out, don't despair! We have replacement nipples that can be swapped in to make your pacifier as good as new. We recommend rotating which pacifier you use, and replacing any worn-out nipples with new ones.
Bottles
No matter what your little is drinking, make sure their bottle is thoroughly washed between each use. Skipping it is a sure way to guarantee temper tantrums and fussy nap times!
Plastic Bottles
Fill a sink with warm water and add a touch of food-grade dish soap. Remove the cap from the bottle and separate all pieces. Use a cloth to thoroughly clean the top and underside of the nipple, as well as the cap if present. Fully submerge the bottle and scrub the inside. Once clean, rinse all parts with fresh water.
Note: Plastic bottles should not be washed in the dishwasher, as the heat and detergent can damage the material and any decorative prints.
Place all parts on a clean rack and let them air dry fully before reassembling or storing. For quicker results, you can dry the pieces with a clean cloth, though it's best to let bottle nipples air dry naturally.
Glass Bottles
Fill a sink with warm water and add a touch of food-grade dish soap. Remove the cap from the bottle and separate all pieces. Use a cloth to thoroughly clean the top and underside of the nipple, as well as the cap if present. Fully submerge the bottle and scrub the inside. Once clean, rinse all parts with fresh water.
Note: Glass bottles can also be washed in the dishwasher. However, be careful with any prints or designs, as these may be damaged in the dishwasher. We recommend only putting clear glass bottles in the dishwasher.
Place all parts on a clean rack and let them air dry completely before reassembling or storing.
